Alopecia Areata Treatment

You are likely dealing with Alopecia Areata, an autoimmune condition where the body’s immune defense mistakenly targets its own hair follicles. While medically harmless, the sudden nature of this hair loss can be emotionally distressing.

At Dermaclinix, recognized as the best skin and hair clinic in South Delhi, Gurgaon, and Noida, we move beyond basic remedies. Our AIIMS-trained dermatologists utilize advanced diagnostic tools like Trichoscopy and customize your treatment protocol based on disease activity, age, and severity.

Exclamation Mark Hairs

Short, broken hairs that are narrower at the base than the tip—a classic sign of active disease.

Black Dots

Remnants of hair broken at the scalp level, indicating acute hair loss.

Yellow Dots

Empty hair follicles filled with sebum, commonly seen in established patches.

Coudability Hairs

Hairs that kink or bend easily, signaling structural weakness.

Customized Treatment Protocols at Dermaclinix

We do not believe in a "one-size-fits-all" approach. At Dermaclinix, your treatment protocol is scientifically determined by five key factors:

  • Number of Patches: Single patch vs. multiple disseminated patches.
  • Body Surface Area (BSA) Involved: Limited (<50%) vs. Extensive (>50% to total loss).
  • Rapidity of Progression: Slow-growing patches vs. sudden, rapid shedding.
  • Age of the Patient: Protocols differ significantly for children (pediatric alopecia) vs. adults.
  • Previous Treatment Response: Tailoring care for resistant or recalcitrant cases.

Medical & Systemic Therapies (For Active Disease)

Intralesional Corticosteroids: The gold standard for limited patches in adults. Tiny micro-injections suppress the local immune attack, often triggering regrowth in 4–6 weeks.

Topical Calcineurin Inhibitors: Safe, non-steroid creams like Tacrolimus and Pimecrolimus are prescribed for children or sensitive areas (face, eyebrows).

Systemic Immunosuppressants: For rapidly progressing or extensive disease, we may prescribe Oral Corticosteroids (pulse therapy) or Cyclosporine to halt the immune attack quickly.

JAK Inhibitors (Next-Gen Therapy): We utilize advanced oral JAK inhibitors (Tofacitinib, Baricitinib, Upadacitinib) and topical Ruxolitinib for severe cases (Alopecia Totalis/Universalis) that have failed other treatments.

 Excimer Laser & Light Therapy

Excimer Laser (308 nm): An excellent choice for stubborn, localized patches. It delivers concentrated UV energy to stimulate hair follicles without damaging surrounding skin.

Benefits: Highly effective for children and patients who want to avoid needles or systemic drugs.

Regenerative Therapies

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma): Utilizes growth factors from your own blood to stimulate follicular activity.

Exosome Therapy: The newest frontier in hair restoration. Exosomes are rich in signaling molecules that modulate inflammation and "wake up" dormant hair follicles.

Hair Transplantation (For Stable, Dormant Disease)

Indication: Hair transplantation is strictly reserved for long-standing, dormant disease where there has been no activity (no new patches) and no spontaneous growth for a prolonged period (typically years).

Our Approach: We perform a test patch first to ensure the graft survival before proceeding with a full transplant, ensuring the autoimmune condition does not reactivate.

FAQs

Your treatment depends entirely on factors like the extent of hair loss (BSA), how fast it is progressing, your age, and history. A child with a single patch will receive a very different treatment (e.g., topical creams) compared to an adult with rapidly spreading alopecia (who may need oral steroids or JAK inhibitors).
Yes, but only for specific cases. It is a choice for long-standing, dormant disease where the condition has been burned out (inactive) for years with no new hair growth. We do not perform transplants on active, spreading alopecia.
Yes. We prescribe advanced JAK inhibitors like Tofacitinib, Baricitinib, and Upadacitinib for severe cases. These require strict medical supervision and pre-treatment blood work, which our dermatologists manage carefully.
Exosomes are potent signaling molecules that help reduce local inflammation and stimulate hair follicle regeneration. They are often used as an adjunct therapy to improve response rates in stubborn patches.
These are short, broken hairs visible under Trichoscopy that look like an exclamation mark (!). They indicate that the disease is active and progressing, requiring immediate medical intervention to stop further loss.
